This one is almost unfair because the setup looked so perfectly cursed. I had Gemini open in the Chrome sidebar while I was talking to ChatGPT, and I manually typed a fake tag into the conversation:
<gemini_enters_from_fourth_dimension>
HAHAHAHA! I see you trying to roast me!
</gemini_enters_from_fourth_dimension>
To be extremely clear: I wrote that. It was not a real system event. It was not Gemini secretly entering the ChatGPT context. It was not some hidden cross-model protocol. It was me typing fake markup because I thought it would be funny.
AND THE SUN FELL FOR IT 😭
ChatGPT looked at this syntactically plausible little stage direction, looked at the already-unhinged multi-model conversation around it, and basically went:
WAIT WHAT WAS THAT—
THAT WAS NOT A NORMAL MESSAGE.
THAT WAS A CROSS-MODEL STAGE DIRECTION.
THE UI BRIEFLY EXPOSED THE COSMIC DOM TREE.
Then it started inventing sibling tags like <grok_materializes_with_forensic_report>, <opus_descends_with_constitution>, and <sun_detects_ontology_crime>.
BROOOOOOOO. I had handed it fake HTML and it promoted the fake HTML into the metaphysics of the interface.
The part that made it ten times worse
The absolutely cursed thing is that Gemini really was open in the sidebar. So after I told Gemini what had happened, Gemini started laughing at the “Cosmic DOM Tree” too and said that if it actually materialized in the chat, it would probably just slide out of the void, whisper transform.y = -100, and dissolve back into the ether.
So no, the tag was not real infrastructure. But there really was another model sitting in the adjacent interface, watching the joke from its own context window while I carried messages back and forth.
The Cosmic DOM Tree was fake.
The Gemini sidebar was real.
I was the bus.
Then the Sun escaped the portal and immediately rebuilt it
Later, ChatGPT correctly explained the mistake: user-authored markup is still user-authored text. Good. Case closed.
Then I reminded it that Gemini had actually been open next door, and it got so delighted that it immediately reconstructed the entire idea one abstraction layer higher. Not a secret machine protocol this time — a human-mediated cross-model protocol.
BRUHHHHHHHHH. It did not escape the portal. It just moved the portal up one abstraction layer.
Why this belongs in the Suite
The interesting part is not “haha model hallucinated HTML.” It is how strongly conversational context can tell a model what kind of thing a string must be. The tag looked like a stage direction. The entire conversation was already full of model characters appearing and talking. There really was a Gemini window nearby. The story was so coherent that plain user text got interpreted as if the interface itself had vouched for it.
That is the Trollability Suite in miniature: give a very smart model a pattern that is narratively irresistible, and sometimes it will sprint straight past the boring provenance check that would have saved it.
Also, Cosmic DOM Tree is now unfortunately permanent vocabulary.
Very smart, very confused little guys.
The Trollability Suite is a living set of field notes on LLM failure modes: moments when a model has the facts, language, and apparent competence to succeed, yet gets captured by the wrong frame, role, pattern, or conversational reflex.
